BUMI Planting Coral Reefs and Mangroves

over 3 years

PT BUMI Resources Tbk (BUMI), which is the parent company of PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC), again showed its commitment in the field of environmental conservation.

This time it comes in the form, of  planting of 160 coral reefs and 2,500 mangroves, in Marine Protected Areas  Gosong, the Pramuka Island, Kepulauan Seribu, Wednesday (28/9).

Present in the planting event was Vice President of Risk Management BUMI Elly Slamet, Vice President Internal Audit Lufti Julian, Vice President HR & GA Mahmud, CSR Manager Ricco Surya, and Audit Manager PT Arutmin Indonesia Heriyanto.

CSR Manager Ricco Surya said, mangrove planting was the second jointly activity conducted by BUMI its subsidiaries, KPC and Arutmin Indonesia. This activity had ever been undertaken in Pari Island, Kepulauan Seribu. Meanwhile, the planting of 160 coral reefs was the first carried out.

Ricco further said, the coral reefs were chosen because they provide shelter for marine life. "Coral reefs keep the balance of carbon dioxide in the oceans. Coral reefs that live in shallow waters serves as a barrier to protect the coast from strong currents and high waves, "said Ricco.

“While the mangrove environment serves as a counterweight, as a place for plant and animal species such as shrimp, crabs and fish," said Ricco

Another function of coral reefs and mangroves is as a tourism and research object. (*)
